Program Overview
About The Role

Peraton is seeking a Ocean Model Researcher at Stennis Space Center in MS.  The geographic scope of the battlespace environment is expanding, placing new demands on existing modeling efforts in dynamic regions of the global ocean and near the seafloor. To meet operational modeling needs in these regions, the Navy Research Laboratory (NRL) is developing methods to refine the model grid for HYCOM, NCOM,  Wavewatch III and other models using cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning (AIML).

What you will do:

  • Identify in NCOM the computations that require double precision for stability and/or acceptable level of numerical round-off error.
  • Modify the identified routines to support using double precision where required.
  • Implement vertical grid interpolation into the NCOM internal two-way nesting methods to enable nests with different vertical grids.

Tasking related to the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM)

  • Add a capability to add isopycnal layers in specified density ranges, demonstrate stability and publish results equivalent to a 96 layer case run at FSU with the ability to show the added benefit of the vertical structure with fewer layers
  • Implement wave to ocean coupling in ESPC:
    • We currently parameterize wave Stokes drift in HYCOM
    • This needs to be turned off and instead use Stokes drift directly from WW3
    • Follow the methodology that has been used in COAMPS
    • Evaluate impact on HYCOM mixed layer depth.
    • Compare cases with no Stokes drift, parameterized Stokes drift and Stokes drift from WW3
    • Publish on the impacts to HYCOM mixing for the three cases.
Qualifications

What you will need:

  • PhD in Mathematics or an Applied Science Field
  • Must have coding experience in MATLAB, Python, and C++
  • Must have experience with Unix/Linux, Shell Scripting, and High Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Must have experience working with standard U.S. Navy ocean models such as HYCOM, NCOM, and Wavewatch III and ocean model reanalysis
  • Must have thorough knowledge of oceanography and mesoscale ocean features such as eddies, fronts, Langmuir cells, and eddy shedding events within ocean currents.
  • Experience working in a Department of Defense research facility strongly preferred
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance
SCA / Union / Intern Rate or Range
