Program Overview
The program is an IDIQ contract for an AWS-based cloud hosting system. Currently, Peraton is supporting the Cloud Security, IoT, and AIML use cases for the environment in a hybrid work environment with Federal employees. Peraton also support the following applications as part of the environment: Dremio, Tableau, Globus, Posit/RStudio, Atlassian, ThingLogix, Alteryx and CloudCheckr.
About The Role
The Department of Interior (DOI) CHS III program will be leading the way for Cloud Hosting and Applications Modernization across DOI and its subordinate bureaus. CHS III will facilitate migration of legacy on-premises applications to a modern, secure and scalable multi-cloud platform. From sensors in active volcanic regions to earthquake detection data, CHS III will be DOI's central cloud processing and data solution. This position can be done remotely.
We are looking for an AWS Cloud SysOps with Windows Server system administration experience to help support and maintain the AWS cloud infrastructure hosting servers running Microsoft Windows Server.
Key Responsibilities
- AWS System Administration: Manage and maintain AWS infrastructure, including EC2, RDS, S3, ELB, VPC, IAM, and related services.
- Microsoft Server System Administration: Maintain deployed EC2 instances running Microsoft Windows Server O/S including: patching, backups, Active Directory, configuration changes
- Monitoring & Alerting: Implement and maintain robust monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions using CloudWatch, AWS Config, CloudTrail, and third-party tools.
- System Performance: Monitor system health and performance, proactively identify issues, and optimize workloads to improve system reliability and efficiency.
- Security & Compliance: Apply security best practices for cloud infrastructure, including identity and access management (IAM), data encryption, patch management, and vulnerability mitigation.
- Backup & Recovery: Develop and manage automated backup, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies.
- Change Management: Support change control processes for system updates, patching, and configuration changes in production and non-production environments.
- Ticket Queue Management: Respond to and resolve tickets in the operations support queue in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring issues are tracked, documented, and closed according to SLAs.
- Automation: Automate repetitive operational tasks using scripts and AWS-native automation tools (e.g., Systems Manager, Lambda, CloudFormation).
- Documentation: Create and maintain clear documentation of system configurations, processes, and operational runbooks.
- Incident Response: Serve as a key member of the incident response team, lead root cause analysis and post-mortem reporting.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 0 years with BS/BA or 4 years exp with HS Diploma/equivalent
- 1–3 years of experience in a Cloud SysAdmin or DevOps role
- 1–3 years of experience with Windows Server system administration and supporting Windows-based systems
- Hands-on experience with AWS (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, CloudWatch; others a plus)
- Basic experience with Infrastructure as Code or Configuration Management Tools
- Experience with troubleshooting production issues in a team environment
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Candidate must be a US Citizen
- Candidate must have an Active Public Trust or the Ability to Obtain one is required
- Candidate must have at least one of the following certifications or be able to attain within 90 Days:
- AWS Cloud Architect - Associate
- AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate
- AWS Certified Developer - Associate
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more AWS Cloud Certification
- Microsoft Server System Administrator certification
- 3+ years of extensive hands-on experience with a wide range of AWS services including but not limited to EC2 instances, S3 buckets, VPC configurations, RDS databases, and other services
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as CloudFormation, GitLab, GitLab Runners
- Experience with Python, PowerShell, AWS CLI, or other scripting languages to automate, troubleshoot and resolve issues
- Experience with incident management, root cause analysis, and resolving high-priority incidents in large, multi-tenant environments using Jira, Confluence, etc.
- Exemplary communication, analytical skills, and technical knowledge across the client environment.
- Ability to produce concise and clear technical documentation.
- Experience working in an Agile environment

Details
Target Salary Range: $66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
