About The Role

The Peraton Health, State and Local Sector is seeking a Technical Writer, Senior Associate to join us in supporting and maintaining the Medicare Fee For Service claims processing system. In this role, you will lead the creation, organization, and maintenance of program documentation for the Medicare Part A, B and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) contracts, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance across a complex systems environment. 

This role plays a critical part in capturing system functionality, documenting architecture and interfaces, and supporting the program through high-quality technical artifacts. The Technical Writer, Senior Associate will work closely with engineering, development, and operations teams to ensure all documentation reflects current system behavior and meets contractual requirements at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  

Technical Writer – Responsibilities 

  • Develops, updates, and maintains comprehensive technical documentation for the DME program, including System Architecture Diagrams, Interface Catalogs, Data Dictionaries, User Guides, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and operational runbooks. 
  • Ensures all documentation is revised and published within 10 business days of system updates, enhancements, or changes, in accordance with PWS requirements. 
  • Establishes, implements, and enforces documentation standards, templates, version controls, and style guidelines to ensure consistency and quality across all program artifacts. 
  • Maintains and organizes a centralized document repository; ensures documentation is properly tagged, archived, and accessible to authorized stakeholders. 
  • Collaborates closely with architects, developers, engineers, analysts, and operational staff to collect accurate information, validate updates, and ensure documentation reflects the current system state. 
  • Translates complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation tailored for both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Conducts periodic audits of documentation to identify gaps, misalignments, or outdated content, and coordinates corrective updates with relevant teams. 
  • Supports the creation of internal and external communication materials, including onboarding documentation, training materials, release notes, and knowledge-base articles. 
  • Assists with compliance documentation and artifact preparation for reviews, audits, and program deliverables. 
  • Participates in Agile ceremonies and release planning sessions to anticipate and plan for upcoming documentation needs. 
Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Information Technology, Computer Science, English, or a related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience; or a High School diploma with 6+ years of directly relevant experience. 
  • 2–5 years of experience developing and maintaining technical documentation within an IT, software development, or systems engineering environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience creating system-level documentation such as architecture diagrams, interface specifications, data dictionaries, and user guides. 
  • Strong ability to interpret technical information from SMEs, engineers, and system artifacts and translate it into clear, accurate documentation. 
  • Experience managing a documentation repository using tools such as Confluence, SharePoint, Git-based platforms, or similar systems. 
  • Proficiency with documentation, diagramming, and collaboration tools including Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, Lucidchart, Confluence, and Jira. 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to maintain accuracy across multiple concurrent documents. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment. 
  • Must be able to achieve and maintain a Public Trust clearance. 
  • US Citizen.

  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience supporting federal government programs or working within a highly regulated environment. 
  • Experience with Medicare DME, Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, or the Medicare Common Working File (CWF) specific processing systems. 
  • Experience working with or in support of CMS programs or contracts. 
  • Familiarity with Agile or SAFe methodologies and participation in Agile Scrum teams. 
  • Experience documenting system integrations involving legacy mainframe systems, cloud environments, or hybrid architectures. 
  • Working knowledge of claims processing systems, enterprise data flows, or large-scale system maintenance efforts. 
  • Experience applying formal documentation standards such as style guides, templates, and terminology catalogs. 
  • Familiarity with GitHub or similar source code management and collaboration tools. 
  • Ability to develop visuals and technical diagrams using industry-standard tools.

Target Salary Range: $80,000 - $128,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
