About The Role

Peraton is currently seeking a Senior Backup & Storage Engineer. 

 

Location: Kansas City, Missouri 

  • This is for on-site work in Kansas City; some occasional remote work possible; rotational on-call requirement. 

 

Mission:

Peraton is seeking a Senior Backup & Storage Engineer to support the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) enterprise-level hybrid cloud data center. This role is critical in delivering secure, reliable, and effective storage, backup, and archiving capabilities that empower USMC customers worldwide to execute vital missions.

 

Responsibilities

As the Senior Backup & Storage Engineer, you will:

  • Support global USMC operations by providing backup, storage, archive, and disaster recovery solutions for enterprise application hosting.
  • Manage Storage, Backup, Archive, and Capacity across Classified, Unclassified, and Staging environments—on-prem and hybrid-cloud (Azure, AWS, VMware Cloud on AWS).
  • Engineer, troubleshoot, operate, and maintain integrated storage, backup, and tape-archiving systems.
  • Monitor and triage incidents and work orders within the Data Center workload and incident response processes.
  • Develop, document, and execute infrastructure changes for storage and backup systems.
  • Deliver high-availability storage and backup services for hosted customers and infrastructure.
  • Oversee capacity reporting and monitoring to support evolving architecture and customer needs.
  • Serve as technical expert for on-prem and cloud-based Storage Area Networks and backup infrastructure.
  • Collaborate on Disaster Recovery and Continuity of Operations strategies aligned with program goals.
  • Work with architects, government, and contractor teams to design efficient storage and backup solutions.
  • Coordinate with vendors and engineering staff for installation, upgrades, configuration, and optimization.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring plans for storage, backup, and capacity events; provide documentation and training for Technical Assistance Center.
  • Ensure compliance with DOD/USMC/HCS security policies, including patching and auditing.
  • Automate routine management tasks, reporting, event notifications, and software updates.
  • Plan for capacity changes and recommend solutions through customer processes.
  • Support 24x7x365 operations, including on-call duties and occasional night/weekend implementations.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements: 

  • Bachelors degree and minimum of 12 years of experience, or a Masters degree and minimum of 10 years, or a PhD and 7 years of experience. In lieu of the degree requirement, will consider someone with a HS diploma and minimum of 16 years of relevant experience. 
  • IAT II Certification required. 
  • NetBackup or hybrid-cloud backup solution experience.
  • Expertise and experience with the following technologies supported in the hybrid-cloud datacenter:
    • NetBackup hybrid-cloud backup solutions
    • Dell Unity Storage
    • NetApp SAN and NAS
    • Cisco MDS and Brocade Fibre Channel Switch management and zoning
    • VMWare NSX-T vSAN & virtualization
    • vRealize Operations Monitoring
  • Experience designing, engineering, operating backup and storage solutions in an enterprise datacenter environment, including troubleshooting and DOD-secure configurations (STIG, FIPS).
  • Experience implementing and operating tape-archiving solutions.
  • Experience implementing DOD/USMC security solutions for Storage and Backup, including requirements for STIG, FIPS. implementation, POA&M development, and support for vulnerability management and accreditation requirements.
  • Experience automating tasks in support of a high-availability storage and backup environment.
  • Firm understanding of ITSM/ITIL processes and change management protocols.
  • Experience working within Agile and traditional project management teams.
  • Strong technical leadership and collaboration skills to work within a diverse team of operational and process disciplines to ensure hosting environment successful operation.
  • U.S. Citizenship required. 
  • Active Secret security clearance required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating, troubleshooting and maintaining Backup and Storage Area Network/Network Attached Storage systems in an enterprise datacenter/hosting environment. NetBackup, Dell Unity, NetApp, HP 3PAR, StoreEver/Store Once experience desired.
  • Experience integrating cloud-based storage and backup solutions in a hybrid-cloud environment (Azure, AWS and VMC on AWS desired).
  • Cloud Storage/Backup experience desired.
  • ITIL certification or ITSM Experience desired.
  • Experience implementing proactive monitoring and event/incident management to ensure prompt resolution of anomalies or outages (vROPS monitoring suite preferred).
  • Experience collaborating with operations teams including virtual teams at other locations to provide optimal backup and storage solutions for infrastructure and hosted applications (Oracle and SQL requirement preferred).
SCA / Union / Intern Rate or Range

Details

Target Salary Range: $104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
