Peraton is seeking an experienced UX/UI and 508 Compliance Engineer to support a large-scale federal Identity and Access Management (IAM) modernization program. This program replacing two legacy IAM systems with a modern, cloud based IAM.
The UX/UI and 508 Compliance Engineer will serve as the subject matter expert for user experience design, UI design, and Section 508 accessibility compliance across all public-facing and internal IAM platforms. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all delivered interfaces are intuitive, accessible, compliant, and aligned with the Brand Style Guide and Design System.
What you will do:
User Experience Design and Research
- Lead user experience design activities across Agile/Scrum development sprints, ensuring all interface changes are grounded in user research and Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles.
- Conduct discovery work to understand the needs of diverse user populations, including external users, internal staff, and privileged account holders.
- Develop and maintain user research artifacts, wireframes, prototypes, and concept validation deliverables in support of all user interface changes.
- Validate new features and material UX changes through concept validation activities; present findings and obtain Product Manager approval prior to implementation.
- Support usability testing activities and ensure usability testing artifacts are available at the close of every applicable sprint.
UI Design and Visual Production
- Design user interfaces and deliver visual comps and mockups for the IAM common login portal, SSO portal, and associated IAM web applications.
- Support quarterly UI/UX updates to the SSO portal, including design mockups, comps, and Design Team coordination.
- Design and contribute new reusable components to the Design System.
- Ensure all interfaces support mobile- and tablet-optimized versions and bilingual (English and Spanish) page rendering where required.
- Participate in quarterly brand working group meetings and ensure all deliverables adhere to the Brand Style Guide.
- Develop screen mockups for all public-facing systems.
Section 508 and Accessibility Compliance
- Serve as the program’s Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance lead for all web applications, software, and ICT deliverables.
- Ensure all deliverables conform to the Revised Section 508 Standards (36 C.F.R. § 1194.1) and all applicable WCAG Level AA Success Criteria.
- Conduct and coordinate automated accessibility testing each sprint using tools such as axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, or equivalent, targeting zero errors on both automated scanner results and manual testing.
- Perform hands-on manual accessibility testing using industry-standard assistive technologies including JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, and keyboard-only navigation across major browsers and operating systems.
- Review wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and design system components for accessibility compliance prior to development; provide early-stage feedback on color contrast, focus order, interactive component patterns, form labeling, and information architecture to prevent downstream defects.
- Author detailed accessibility defect reports including issue descriptions, WCAG success criteria references, severity ratings, and step-by-step remediation recommendations; collaborate directly with developers to resolve findings and conduct verification testing to confirm fixes.
- Apply working knowledge of ARIA roles, states, and properties (WAI-ARIA) to identify and resolve accessibility defects in dynamic web content and custom interface components.
- Support the preparation and review of Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) and Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) for software products and solutions delivered under the program.
- Remediate accessibility defects identified through agency OCIO testing, internal testing, or sprint reviews in a timely manner to avoid contract disincentives.
- Ensure software deliverables meet WCAG Level AA requirements plus 502 Interoperability with Assistive Technology and 503 Application requirements.
- Support co-branding and Section 508 compliance requirements for application relying parties on the IAM common login portal.
- Adhere to the Style Guide and Section 508 compliance standards for all IAM websites and web content updates.
Agile Delivery and Collaboration
- Operate as an embedded member of the Agile development team, contributing to design, development, testing, quality assurance, and delivery activities each sprint.
- Collaborate with developers, product managers, scrum masters, and federal stakeholders to ensure UX and accessibility requirements are integrated into sprint planning and backlog grooming.
- Maintain Jira ticket documentation with user research artifacts for all closed tickets involving user interface changes, in compliance with program SLA requirements.
- Communicate design decisions, accessibility findings, and compliance status clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
