Position Overview:

 

Peraton is seeking an experienced Engineer – Aviation Weather Systems to support modernization efforts under the FAA Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) contract. This position provides high-level systems engineering and for the Alaska Weather Needs Package, serving as the primary coordinator for engineering execution, field activities, and technical documentation. 

 

Operating as the engineering integrator for aviation weather systems — including AWOS, VWOS, and WCAM — this role provides centralized visibility into program execution, risks, and strategic alignment in accordance with the No Excuses Exceptional Delivery Standard (NEEDS). The integrator is accountable for data flows, interface dependencies, and system interactions between weather observation assets and the broader National Airspace System (NAS). 

 

This position is onsite in Washington D.C. 

 

Working in partnership with the Weather Workstream Lead, the engineer will coordinate multidisciplinary efforts, manage project schedules and deliverables, facilitate technical decision-making, and ensure successful execution of aviation weather modernization activities. The successful candidate will work closely with FAA stakeholders, engineering teams, subcontractors, installation partners, and internal functional organizations throughout the project lifecycle.

NAS Integration & High Level Weather Observation Systems 

  • Provide high-level systems engineering support that accounts for data flows and dependencies between weather observation systems and external NAS systems. 
  • Manage interfaces between weather observations systems, and interconnected NAS systems, maintaining data flow integrity across all system boundaries. 
  • Develop and maintain integrated project schedules, action item trackers, risk registers, and technical deliverable schedules. 
  • Support project reviews, briefings, status reporting, and executive-level communications. 

AWOS Systems Engineering 

  • Lead comprehensive engineering support for AWOS weather observation projects, including oversight of pre-site surveys, site investigations, and development of detailed engineering drawings and transmittals. 
  • Oversee preparation of complete AWOS engineering packages that adhere to FAA siting requirements, Airport Layout Plans (ALP), and modular scalability standards. 
  • Direct engineering design deliverables at the systems level, encompassing vicinity maps, project location plans, site development drawings, grading and storm drainage plans, and equipment pad designs tailored to site-specific conditions and AWOS-C equipment requirements. 
  • Ensure site plans accurately depict existing and proposed conditions, necessary trenching for electrical service, and reflect coordination with known concurrent projects, as applicable. 

Engineering Coordination & Execution 

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure technical products — including drawings, analysis reports, and implementation packages — are completed accurately and on schedule. 
  • Support preparation, quality review, and delivery of technical reports, engineering recommendations, requirements documentation, and implementation packages. 
  • Track technical issues, project risks, assumptions, dependencies, and decisions through resolution. 
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, engineering recommendations, site survey findings, project decisions, and final deliverables. 
  • Coordinate technical discussions with FAA representatives, engineering organizations, subcontractors, and installation partners. 
  • Support procurement planning by identifying long-lead materials, equipment dependencies, and implementation constraints. 
  • Coordinate closely with Engineering, Quality, Safety, Cybersecurity, Contracts, Logistics, Procurement, and Program Controls. 
  • Assist with development of implementation strategies, migration planning, and technical transition activities. 
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance project execution, documentation quality, and schedule performance. 
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to maintain/obtain a public trust clearance. 
  • Minimum of 8 years with BS/BA; Minimum of 6 years with MS/MA; Minimum of 3 years with PhD; Minimum of 10 years with AS;12 years in lieu of a degree, 
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex technical projects involving engineering, infrastructure modernization, telecommunications, aviation systems, or other mission-critical environments. 
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple organizations. 
  • Experience managing technical schedules, risks, action items, deliverables, and customer communications. 
  • Experience developing engineering documentation, technical reports, implementation plans, requirements packages, or acquisition documentation. 
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities in dynamic environments. 
  • Experience working directly with Government customers and senior leadership. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience supporting the FAA, Department of Transportation, or National Airspace System modernization programs. 
  • Experience with aviation weather systems including AWOS, ASOS, VWOS, WCAM, weather sensors, environmental monitoring systems, or related airport infrastructure. 
  • Familiarity with FAA siting requirements, Airport Layout Plans (ALP), and NAS interface standards, including data flow and systems integration requirements. 
  • Experience coordinating remote field site surveys, engineering assessments, or installation activities. 
  • Knowledge of airport communications, networking, power infrastructure, environmental systems, and site readiness considerations. 
  • Familiarity with FAA engineering, quality assurance, configuration management, safety, and acquisition processes. 
  • Experience supporting system implementation, testing, integration, and operational transition. 
  • Experience using Microsoft Project, Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar project management tools. 
  • Agile experience is desirable; however, the primary focus of this role is high-level systems engineering, technical project execution, and NAS integration coordination.

Details

Target Salary Range: $86,000 - $138,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
